How to use Prova Board to Waterproof Your Bathroom

One of the most important tasks to get right when putting in your new bathroom is waterproofing. Showers, tub surrounds, countertops – even walls and back splashes – are important areas to protect. In this post we’ll explain how to use Prova Board to waterproof your bathroom. It’s much easier than you might think.

What is Prova Board?

What exactly is Prova Board? And why is it so special? Prova Board has some pretty amazing qualities that make it the optimum choice for waterproofing your bathroom.

Prova Board is a lightweight, high density tile backer board. The core of Prova Board is 100% waterproof XPS (extruded polystyrene), this fantastic material is resistant to vapour pressure and mold growth. We all know mold is the last thing you want hiding in your walls!

The boards come in 36″ x 60″ x 1/2″ pieces, and as we’ll explain in the next section, they are very easy to use.

Prova Board Installation

Prova Board installation couldn’t be easier. It is so easy to use that all you really need is a sharp knife, screws and washers (Prova Fasteners), and some tubes of Prova-Seal. You can actually have an entire tub unit or shower done in just an hour or two!

It’s very quick and easy to install over wood stud framing. It can be installed over existing drywall but we’d recommend taking down the drywall before putting up your Prova board.

Measure Twice, Cut Once!

Simply measure your space, cut your boards accordingly, then mount the them using your Prova fasteners.

TIP: We always recommend boarding the back wall first as it makes the two side walls easier and the gaps smaller.

Once you’ve completed installing the boards, the next step is applying the Prova Seal to make your enclosure completely waterproof.

Seal Up Your Boards

Prova Seal, a premium hybrid silicone waterproof sealant, comes with a putty knife and corner trowel to allow for easy application. You’ll want to generously apply the sealer over the washers and screws, where the boards meet, and in all of the corners.

Use the putty knife to smooth the prova-seal and allow proper drying time of 3-4 hours before tiling.

You can see an overview of the installation process in the video below.

Was this done by a professional?

With a minimum of effort and very basic set of tools you can professionally waterproof your bathroom. Once the Prova Board is up, sealed, and the sealant dry you are ready to install your tiles, tub enclosure, etc.
